When I first purchased my apple computer just recently, one of the first things i started doing was putting together this website. I will admit that i read a few articles on google adsense and thought hey i can make money too. It all sounded so easy initially so I started up iweb and began putting together this website. I soon found out that none of it was as easy as I thought it was going to be. One of the first things i realized i wanted to do was to add those submission tags that you see at the bottom of articles.
I figured how hard could it be when i could add html snippets into iweb in a matter of seconds. Well it turned out to be much harder than I thought so i did some research and found iweb Buddy. So i purchased it with only adding these in mind, not knowing what else it could do. What i got was so much more.
For one it allows you to organize multiple domains. With iweb you can have as many sites as you want but no way to organize them. Iweb Buddy also helps you with RSS feeds. It allows you to redirect your rss feed to the popular feedburner so you can keep track of what is going on at your site. It helps you set up your google analytics account, which i was having big trouble doing until i read the tutorial and bam it was set up. And then my personal favorite is the social bookmarking. Iweb Buddy has an enormous list of bookmarks to choose from to implement into your blog. It puts them all at the bottom of each article and makes them all the same size and everything. That is very convenient considering what it would take for me to do that on my own. Iweb Buddy also helps you inject haloscan comments into your blog. Another nice feature which you can’t use if you don’t publish to .mac using iweb.
And one last thing i will say about this software is how friendly the Marcus Zarra was in helping me take care of some of the particulars when it came to using his software. Iweb Buddy comes with a very help tutorial, however, me being the website publishing noob that i am had a lot of questions. Some were even outside the realm of iweb buddy, but Marcus was always replying to my emails throughout the entire process and answering my questions.
The first obstacle i came across with iweb buddy was my lack of knowledge on workflow with iweb and iweb buddy. When using iweb buddy, you need to make sure you have the proper workflow down or you will never get anything on it to work. The proper workflow for someone who doesn’t publish to .mac is as follows:
1. Publish in iWeb to a folder
2. Tell iWeb Buddy where that folder is via File -> Set Domain
3. Process in iWeb Buddy
4. Upload to your servers.
The next obstacle i came across was adding haloscan comments into my blog.
This was an easy fix once Marcus and i figured out what was going on. When adding my name to the Haloscan box below, i was simply closing the settings tab without hitting enter after i put in my name - when you hit enter it accepts your username and keeps it there. From that point on my comments section were placed in every blog. Very easy fix.
With google analytics, Marcus tells you exactly where to go to find your analytics number. To access this identification number:
1. Log into your Google Analytics account.
2. Select “Edit” in the Settings column of the site that you are working on.
3. Select “Check Status” in the upper right corner of the following page.
4. Copy or write down the account number that is after _uacct = in the text area. This is your account and site number.
After you find this number you enter it into the box below and after you upload to your server it is set up and you can then check your analytics account online. Trust me when i tell you this is nice because i tried doing this without iWeb Buddy and it was a nightmare. Once i found my analytics number in the javascript google wants added to your site everything is a piece of cake.
There are still other uses for this software that i have not covered but these were the biggies for me. For anyone using iWeb, this is software is a must have if you want to spruce up your website. So in closing, of all the things this software can do none is more impressive than the immediate response and help i received from the develop himself, Marcus. We literally have about a 20 reply email message going back and forth with him helping me every step of the way. That is something you can’t put a price on. If you don’t believe look below, this is a screenshot of our emails in my gmail account.
